Aarhus University is seeking a director to the Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies (AIAS). AIAS was founded in 2013 with a mission of advancing research of the highest quality at Aarhus University by attracting talented, highly qualified fellows worldwide and across all disciplines. The ambition of AIAS is to develop further the interdisciplinary and international profile of the institute by recruiting diverse groups of fellows on both individual and theme-based collaborative fellowships. The institute plays an important role in attracting excellent researchers to Aarhus and in connecting and establishing collaborations across the faculties and departments at the university.

AIAS is funded by Aarhus University Research Foundation and Aarhus University. In addition to the existing funding, it is expected that the management of AIAS will actively explore additional funding and work to develop new fellowship opportunities.
AIAS is seeking an internationally accomplished academic and administrative leader who will provide a dynamic leadership of AIAS. The director must further establish AIAS as an international institute for excellence in research, and consolidate it as a globally visible intellectual center for talent development and recruitment of excellent scientists. The new AIAS Director must have a passion for interdisciplinary research and have the capability and ambition to develop the institute in this direction for the benefit of Aarhus University and the research community at large. The director must also have the ability to seek out new opportunities in order to explore new grounds and encourage researchers from diverse disciplines, nationalities and seniority to collaborate in novel and creative ways.

The position as director is a part-time position (50%) open for active researchers, who are interested in combining the director position at AIAS with an existing research position.

Tasks
It is a clear ambition of AIAS to achieve the best possible synergetic development between AIAS as a home to researchers with strong international profiles and combine this with in-depth scientific and interdisciplinary research collaborations. Therefore, the successful applicant must:

  • Have a keen eye for interdisciplinary collaboration possibilities, both for fellows and for other researchers employed at Aarhus University.
  • Be visionary and proactive in relation to new development possibilities for the individual fellow and for AIAS in general. This will entail the ability to adjust, develop and implement instruments and initiatives that will contribute to a lively, inspiring and scholarly ambitious, international research community.
  • Engage and contribute to the international networks and collaborations that AIAS are an active partner in.
  • Have a proven track-record and the expected potential to actively identify and attract funding possibilities, nationally and internationally.
The director will have personnel responsibilities for employed fellows and the AIAS deputy director. The deputy director is also head of the secretariat. The AIAS secretariat is responsible for the daily running of AIAS including recruitment processes, onboarding of fellows, development of programmes, providing services to in-house fellows and associate fellows as well as organizing events for both fellows and other users of the facilities at AIAS.

Qualifications
We envision the successful applicant will have the following qualifications:
  • Being an internationally recognized researcher with research management experience.
  • Proven experience in attracting research funding for research projects.
  • Experience from and the ambition to work in an international and interdisciplinary research environment.
  • A strategic mindset and the ability of seeing possibilities and creating changes, in order to enhance and develop the interests and goals of the institute.
  • A large network and the skills to respectfully and positively work and collaborate with people and groups of very different academic disciplines, cultures and backgrounds.
The director will refer to the Rector of Aarhus University. The running of AIAS is supervised by the AIAS Board of Directors.

The director will be hired in accordance with the agreement for academics in Denmark between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC).

The director will be hired on a fixed-term contract (cirkulære om åremålsansætttelse). Salary commensurate with experience and in accordance with the national employment agreements.
